Ornellaia

Ornellaia, situated in the picturesque DOC Bolgheri in Toscana, is among Italy’s most esteemed wine producers, recognised for its exceptional Super Tuscan wines. Established by Marchese Lodovico Antinori of the revered Antinori family, with the assistance of winemaker Tibor Gál, Ornellaia stands as a testament to the region’s rich wine history. Neighbouring the acclaimed Tenuta San Guido, the producer of the original “Super Tuscan” Sassicaia, Ornellaia was envisioned as a competitive response to other renowned wines from the Antinori lineage. With its inception in 1981, the vineyards produced their inaugural vintage in 1985, which heralded the birth of one of Italy’s most prestigious Bordeaux-style red wines. Over the years, partnerships and ownership have evolved, with Robert Mondavi Winery and later the Frescobaldi family playing significant roles. Current winemaker Axel Heinz, along with the enduring consultation of Michel Rolland, ensures Ornellaia’s legacy remains untarnished, continually delighting wine aficionados worldwide.
